Is this the Buckton Depot?

Somewhere I read that this old building was once the Buckton Station. It isn't the original depot, though; that was destroyed during the Civil War.

The railroad lines were important and often fought over. Confederate troops under Turner Ashby attacked Federal forces at Buckton Depot during the Battle of Front Royal. (See this post for more.)

I used this image to practice blank and white "quadtone" conversions for my Photoshop class. It wasn't pretty before and it still isn't, but it is suitably somber for a ruined old building.

  1. Not all pictures need to be pretty. This is a good shot of an abandoned building.

  3. Linda,

I have traveled to Buckton and was wondering if the station was in the bowed out section of Bucks Mill road just before it crosses the tracks.

If you look at the map “Map of the Battle of Buckton Station Taken from Blue and Grey Magazine.” On the link below it suggest the location. I also have looked hard to find a description of the station with no luck.

    1. Also, have you read the chapter in “Three Days in the Shenandoah: Stonewall Jackson at Front Royal and Winchester?” If you don’t have it, you can get it on Kindle.

  4. Since the station is apparently gone and the area has flooded a few times, it is hard to say. It’s been a long time since I saw the source that identified the building I posted as the location of the station, but it was likely in the place you describe. The blog you reference has a contact page so Mr. Dalton can probably tell you more.
